MATERI SPEAKING

Introducing Myself.

Dalam materi Bahasa Inggris kelas 10 ini, kita akan mempelajari cara memperkenalkan diri, mulai dari nama, umur, alamat, dan lain-lainnya.

1. Name
Now, to introduce a name, there are many sentences that can be used. Here are some examples of self-introductions to introduce a name:

Hi, my name is Najwa Shihab. (Hello, my name is Najwa Shihab)
Hi, I am Najwa Shihab. (Hello, I am Najwa Shihab)
The example above is how to introduce yourself with your full name. However, you can also introduce your name separately as below.

My first name is Najwa. (My first name is Najwa)
My surname is Shihab. (My surname is Shihab.)
My family name is Shihab. (My family name is Shihab)
Hi, my last name is Shihab. (Hello, my last name is Shihab)
Hi, my nickname is Najwa. (Hello, my nickname is Najwa)
Generally, in Indonesian, we use the words "introduce,....." before saying a name. Well, in English, there's actually one too!

So, what is the English "introduce?"

Yep, you can use "let me introduce myself" which means "let me introduce myself" at the beginning of the sentence. So, when combined it becomes:

Let me introduce myself. My name is Najwa Shihab! (Let me introduce myself. My name is Najwa Shihab)

2. Age, Date of Birth, and Birthday
Okay, after introducing your name, your interlocutor will usually ask for your age and date of birth. So, here is an example of a self introduction to state your age that you can use:

I am 15 years old. (I am 15 years old)
Then, to tell the date of birth and birthday, you can use three ways, namely:

I was born on November 26th, 2001. (I was born on November 26, 2001)
I was born in November 2001. (I was born in November 2001)
I was born in 2001. (I was born in 2001)
My birthday is on November 26th. (My birthday is on November 26th)
For the record:

On: used when mentioning the date as well.

In: used when no date is mentioned.

3. Place of Residence
Another important part of introducing my self is explaining where you live and where you come from. For example, when asked "Where are you from?" or "Where do you come from?".

Well, you can answer it by using sentences like the one below:

I am from Indonesia. (I am from Indonesia)
I am from Bandung. (I am from Bandung)
However, if asked "Where do you live?", you can answer with the sentence:

I live in Margahayu. (I live in Margahayu)
I live on Margahayu Street. (I live on Margahayu Street)
I live at Margahayu Street No.23.
For the record:

In: used to explain the name of the area.

On: used to describe the street name.

At: is used to describe the full address and house number.

Well, you know what? It turns out that there are still many people who use "where are you from?" and "where do you come from?" incorrectly. What's the difference?

"Where are you from?" implies that you want to know the city, region, or country that the other person is from. It's also more commonly used.

Meanwhile, "where do you come from?" implies that you want to know the other person's background, nationality, or ethnicity. This question sentence is also rarely used because it seems outdated.

For this reason, Zenius pals should use this question sentence more carefully! Otherwise, the other person might get offended.

4. Hobby and School Origin
Questions about hobbies are often asked. So, here is an example of introducing my self to express hobby:

My hobby is reading. (My hobby is reading)
Or, if you have more than one hobby, you can use "hobbies"

My hobbies are reading and listening to music. (My hobbies are reading and listening to music)
Then, to tell the origin of the school, you can use the sentence:

I go to SMAN 1 Jakarta. (I go to SMAN 1 Jakarta)
I am a student at SMAN 1 Jakarta. (I am a student at SMAN 1 Jakarta)
I study at SMAN 1 Jakarta. (I study at SMAN 1 Jakarta)

5. Ideals
Questions about goals are also often asked so we need to know how to answer them. Here are examples of introduction my self sentences to express aspirations:

I want to be a doctor when I grow up. (I want to be a doctor when I grow up)
I want to build a school when I grow up. (I want to build a school when I grow up)
My dream is to become a doctor. (I want to become a doctor)
So, what if you don't have a dream? Well, you can use sentences like the ones below:

I don't know yet, but I'm interested in the entertainment industry. (I don't know yet, but I'm interested in the entertainment industry)

The strategy in making this self-creation is in the form of a video that makes you make a video of yourself when you introduce yourself.

The assessment that I will give is seen from your speaking technique such as speed of speech (tempo), confidence, intonation, pronunciation and your body language.
